Che Bello Giorno!

May 18, 2009

Day 2 a Roma, today was a whirlwind about Rome with Carlo and Luca, mostly from the car. So one thing about Romans, even though there is a great public transportation system in the city, they love to drive their cars, despite the insane traffic and inability to find parking.

We drove into Rome this morning, where we met Carlo, and took a walk to Parco Degli Aquadotti, to see the old Roman aquaducts, if you have been to our house you have seen the pictures from our previous trip in our dining room. We absolutely love the Aquadotti, it is very peaceful, you suddenly walk out of the hustle and bustle of Rome and it’s as if you find yourself in another time all together.

From here we took a looong car ride to several Roman churches…at some point they all run together, the part that really stuck out was the fact that we ran across 6 lanes of CRAZY Romans multiple times to get there. We also hopped out of the car at one point for the highlight of my day an antique Roman chocolate factory…unfortunately I did not get to spend enough time here, it was a very quick stop in a fun filled day.

Another car ride landed us on the Ponte Mille, an old bridge for lovers. There are multiple sets of chains on the bridge and lovers come and place a lock on the chains and throw the key into the river below to symbolize their love is locked in eternally. Richard and I signed our lock and placed it right in the center, and threw all three key into the river.

We had to stop for lunch at some point, and with Carlo, this is no small event. I ate more in the one meal than I usually do in an entire day. We started out with ostrica (raw oysters), and a pizza dough bread, followed by a fusilli with frutti di mare pesto (fruits of the sea, clams, mussels, and calamari), then we had a kobe beef steak the size of my head with potatoes and bruschetta…WOW! I was more full than on Thanksgiving!

One more car ride landed us near the old city, so just a short walk took us to piazza del popolo (which was my favorite piazza on our first trip). Today it was not my favorite because one of the twin churches was under construction, so it was covered with scaffolding and could not be seen. From here we strolled down the via Margutta (famous artists street) and then on to Piazza di Spanga, where the theme of the day became doppo la scuola (after school). Lining the road from the piazza di Spanga are very expensive shops, including Bulgari, Ferragamo, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Gucci, Cartier, etc… One last stop before heading to Carlo’s, Gelato!!! (2 for 2)

We retired to Carlo’s for dinner, drinks, and entertainment. By entertainment I am referring to his large Italian family, currently he has two daughters, a grand daughter, and a mother-in-law living with him, and they typify American stereotypes of an Italian family, it was wonderful. We also had our first pizzas of the trip, there is just no comparison to anything we have at home, they were wonderful.

Benvenuto a Roma!

May 15th We flew from Dallas to London to Rome on British Airways. It was a great flight, albeit long, we had individual video screens with new releases where I watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Last Chance Harvey, and Yes Man. Then the flight was over...but we had to sit for 4 exhausted hours in Heathrow awaiting our next flight. We arrived right on time in Rome, and flew through customs without even a stamp of our passports, which I was a little upset about.

We were so exhausted we just came to the family's house, relaxed, and then ate our first wonderful dinner, and crashed!!! For dinner we had Buccatini alla Carbonara, followed by Tuna Stuffed Zucchini with Tomatoes, and homemade bread.

The itroductions...

Guilia is Richard's 16 year old cousin... (the purple shirt she has on in the picture is the gift I got her for those of you I discussed this with, she loved it)

Zio Luca is his only uncle

Rosa (Rosella) is his aunt

We are staying at their house while in Rome.

Today, May 16th....

We started our tour by visiting the Catacombe di San Calisto, which was very interesting. Over 500,000 Christians from AD 80's to AD 300's. There were 4 levels of catacombs that were built from top to bottom. I learned the meaning of the word cemetary, it comes from the Greek word meaning dormitory to indicate that it is just a sleep, that we will be ressurected. The pagan term for cemetary was necropolis "city of death". The one thing that the tour guide mentioned that stuck with me was that we are all Christians albeit from different denominations, she said "We are a mosaic making up the body of Christ"
We then walked around the old city, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, looking for food. We ended up eating at a traditional Roman restaurant, I had Tortelloni con Funghi e Proscuitto (with mushrooms and proscuitto) and Richard had Maccaroni all'Arribiata (spicy tomatoe sauce).

We then trekked back to the Castel Sant'Angelo a fortress in early Rome down the street from the Vatican, or San Pietro's Basilica. The highlight of the castel were the stunning views of Rome as you rose higher and higher up the balconies. It was absolutely breathtaking. We missed it last time we visited, so let me reccThen on the way home we had to stop for the obligatory gelato!

Then back home to blog and eat dinner...but first Carlo and Mariolena stopped by to say hello and welcome us. Mariolena is Mariagrazia (Rich's mom) and Luca's first cousin and Carlo is her husband, so Richard's second cousin. So the best thing about dinner the past two nights has been conversing uning lots of hand gestures, Guilia's broken English and Richard's broken Italian, but I feel like I have learned so much about Italy, it has been wonderful so far...Tomorrow is another day and will hopefully bring another entry!ommend if you are planning on visiting Rome anytime it is not to be missed!

Thursday's Customer Appreciation Day...

Today was Christmas in May....May 7, 2009

For Christmas Lisa got us season tickets to the Dallas Summer Musicals...I was going to buy tickets to Rent (esentially the same gift)...so we first went to the King Tut Exhibit at the DMA.

Lisa really enjoyed the soft ($$$) Camel in the Gift Shop

I really enjoyed the exhibit, I was amazed at the wooden sculptures that were thousands of years old and remained completely intact, the intricate details on every item from jewelery to furniture, and the translation of the heiroglyphs. However, my favorite relic in the exhibit was the boy king's golden daggar, it was one of the items burried with him.

We look good as femal Pharohs

King Tut was 9 years old when he took over the crown, can you imagine a 9 year old King? He held the throne 10 years before dieing suddenly of unknown causes, the mystery that keeps people interested year after year. They exumed the body a few years ago and found a Femur fracture, which truly amazes me...Death by femur fracture alone? Today femur fractures suck, but are easily treatable, but you can lose up to 1.5 Liters of blood from a femur fracture. If it was in fact the femur fracture that killed him, how did he get the femur fracture to begin with?

Me and the King's Sarcophagus (in the gift shop)

Then we got Free Beer!!! We stopped at a Deli in Uptown, where it was customer appreciation day, beer was our reward. I felt very appreciated!

Then, the crowning glory of the day, RENT. It was absolutely amazing. The two male leads, Adam Pascal (Roger) and Anthony Rapp (Mark), were the original broadway leads and played the roles in the movie as well. All of the male characters were very strong, but I was a little disappointed with the performance of Mimi. It was by far the best show I have ever seen. Thanks Lisa!!!

Katherine's Wedding

May 1, 2009

I've found a new motivation for blogging...at the end of the year I want to be able to look back over the last year and remember the funny moments and the little details that have been forgotten with time.

A wedding is a wedding, generally the same seqence of events, just different people and different colors. It is the moments that cannot be replicated. Katherine's (a friend from nursing school) wedding was beautiful, she looked amazing, the cakes were delicious, we enjoyed seconds at dinner, it didn't rain, plus there was plenty of wine to keep things interesting. Now to enjoy those special memories of the evening...

Let's start before the wedding, where Melissa, Jess, and I were getting ready together in Jess's sweat box bathroom, enjoying some rose spumante. It was so hot getting ready in this little bathroom, with the humid weather, plus the fact that Matt had just showered in the bathroom, and we had straight irons and curling irons blazing. This lead to me shedding some clothing while getting ready, and almost leading to an accidental incounter with the man of the house sans pants...luckily there was no exposure. But it is always so much more fun getting ready with the girls, than getting ready alone.

Once at the wedding the fun continues. One of my favorite topics of conversation at dinner was that of Melissa's tiny inner black woman. Also, we enjoyed reminiscing about all of our own wedding days. We certainly enjoyed our token wedding swing dance, albeit this time a little embarassing. Not because I was flashing the world, but because we were the only ones on the dance floor and Richard almost dropped me on a dip...then again he actually did drop me in the parking lot on the way out to the car. It was really funny, he picked me up while giggling hysterically all the way to the car, then when he put me down we both took a tumble in the parking lot...Luckily we were both drunk at this point.

We ended the evening with a feircely competitive game of Taboo. In which I got 8 card and Richard only got 7, therefore making me the WINNER! He had a hard time accepting it. We had a great time !

Congrats Greg and Katherine!
(No pictures, my camera is still broken, no new one yet)

Welcome to the World Carly Michelle

Carly Michelle Pace

Born: April 27, 2009 0750am

This is Amanda and Jason's second bundle of joy. They now have the perfect all American family of four with a boy and a girl. Jonah will be 2 next week, WOW! I can hardly believe Jonah's been with us so long, and here they go bringing another beautiful little one into the world.

Amanda had a scheduled C-section on the 27th, a day of rain and swine flu. We got the title of first friends to meet this little girl, monday night after I got off work I went home washed off the work cooties, and we headed to the hospital. She was born at Centennial Medical Center in Frisco, and it was quite possible the eeriest hospital I've ever been in. Working in a hospital and having 2 years of nursing school with clinicals in many different hospitals, have lead me to associate a hospital with hustle and bustle, lots of people, and the smell.... This was the quietest hospital I've ever been in, it was very nice, new and clean too. These are 3 things that are never associated with Parkland, very new to me.

We really enjoyed meeting Carly, and welcoming her into the world. I was particularly excited that she decided to wake up and open her beautiful eyes while I was holding her. She was a very unusually pretty newborn, with a perfectly round head... a benefit of a C-section.

So if you read my blog, you'll notice that this is not our first baby welcome in recent weeks. We just welcomed SamE last week, but Richard was too scared to hold her. I think he feels like he is going to break babies, I'm pretty sure he wasn't comfortable with Leo and Jonah until they were about 9 months old. He rallied his courage tonight though, and held Carly. He did just fine!

Congratulations Jason, Amanda and Jonah!

Delta Theta's 25th Reunion

Agenda April 24 &25

Friday Night
7pm Meet and Greet in the Chapter Room
Saturday Morning
10am Ritual
12pm Lunch at the Green House
6:30pm Rose Ball at Metropolitan Catering
9:30 Out at Tavern (This was not part of the formal itinerary, but was necessary after it)

This was a very nice weekend, a lot of work went into making it perfect. It was a little sad for me though. There is a core group of girls that I think of when I think about my collegiate life in AOII and unfortunately I only got to see three of them. However, it is amazing to have this one common bond with all these women.
The best part of the reunion for me, besides seeing some women I really love, was getting on the elevator in Stark Hall, pressing 6, and being greeted by the familiar unchanged smell of the dorms as the doors opened. It was nice that something had not changed.

The weekend got a lot better after rose ball when we went out to Tavern. Richard's best friend from high school, Brandon, came out and entertained him, while I enjoyed rekindling some old friendships.

Welcome Samantha Elise ...SamE

Today Richard took the day off, and Jason had already started his baby leave, so we all went over to Sarah and Andrew's to meet their new addition. She is an absolutely precious little girl, a little jaundiced today, just looked like she had a baby tan! We really enjoyed meeting her, and getting to be part of Sarah and Andrew's life during this Exciting time.

Thank you guys, and congratulations on your beautiful new family!
